Answer: The focus of the hunting community since 2005 has been to get rid of a bad law rather than enthusiastically develop alternative activities. But, in the current political climate, it is far more likely that politicians will try to impose further restrictions on hunting rather than repeal the Hunting Act. Promoting and developing excellence in trail hunting, and building the social licence for modern hunting, is critical to ensuring the future of hunts by 1) removing any justification for further legal restrictions, and 2) generating maximum subscriber and community support for individual hunts.
Answer: No. FWH is purely a vehicle for promoting and enhancing modern hound work, and the FWH Awards are an independent mark of excellence, like a Michelin star, not an assessment by a governing body.
Answer: We are hunting people who are determined that ours should not be the last generation to experience the incomparable joys of following hounds across country, and to do that we need to look forwards, not backwards.
Answer: Every generation since the very beginning of organised hunting has said that it will never be as good again, yet each succeeding generation has loved the sport as they have found it. The pessimists have always been wrong! Many if not most objections to trail hunting are born of insufficient understanding of the possibilities of the sport and can be overcome through its imaginative evolution. This is why FWH is so keen to foster the kind of sharing of experiences between hunts that is only just beginning to happen. For trail hunting and modern hound work to really prosper, it is vital that the hunting community moves on from seeing it as an unwelcome stopgap measure, to be endured until repeal of the ban on traditional hunting is achieved. We must see trail hunting as an evolving sport that has the potential to entrance future generations in the same way that traditional hunting entranced past generations.
